The area of Provence is quite laid back. The one thing that many tourists go here is for the various vineyards that are so abundant. Wine tasting is not necessarily a sight to see but should certainly be high on your list if you are in the area of Provence on vacation.

Vaucluse and the Luberon

The Luberon was made famous through the works of Peter Mayle and this area offers many great sights to see including some of the better forested areas of France. Many small villages occupy this area and are mostly populated by the locals as not too many tourists have bought up land and property here. You could easily lose yourself soaking up the atmosphere while just gazing at the world go by.

Bouches-du-Rhône

This area includes the port city of Marseille. This is an area where painters where known to get away from it all and have included such greats as Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. Arles

This was the place where Vincent Van Gough lived and worked. Most notably in this town are the well preserved Roman ruins that seem to attract many tourists and other history buffs. A relic that is still used for bull fighting Les Arenes is perhaps one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters that is still in use today. You can visit this place without taking in a bull fight if you are too squeamish for that.

The area of Provence offers many things to a vast array of people. I am sure that it will be possible for just about everyone to find what they enjoy in this southern area of France.

The first most notable event is that of the Festival d’Avignon which takes place in the walled city of Avignon. This is a event that celebrates the arts including theater, dancing and music. An international audience takes hold during this time in Avignon and the crowds swarm the city to take in every moment. This event has an interesting history in that it was started by the actor and director Jean Vilar in 1947 when he was asked to stage a play of T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral at Avignon’s Palais des Papes. This later blossomed into a creative outlet for keeping the artist community active and in touch with their audiences. Later on from this Festival d’Avignon is the harvest of lavender which creates its own festival in the town of Digne-les-Bains which is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region. Every year this event is celebrated to highlight the abundant crop of flowers that grow in this region of Provence. A half century old tradition you can imagine that many of the locals are quite passionate about this celebration. This passion shows in how they put on this event as the level of detail is very high and should not be missed. The one event that encompasses the entire region is the harvesting of the grapes. This event takes place during September through October. Since each vineyard harvests at different times this is a whole month or two affair.
