Best Restaurants in Provence

Food for the French is a passion! Eating out is required part of French life. And this is rightfully so as the French have refined the art of cooking to extreme levels. While the gastronomic tastes of many French are unusual to many Americans they have dishes that should be tried and savored

Since this is all about the best restaurant in Provence I should point out that I will not pick the best one of the lot that I selected. The reason is that this subject may be a bit too controversial to say that one restaurant is far superior to any other. Rather you should try and take in all of the various nuances that each restaurant offers and pick the one you like based upon your impressions after visiting them.

Auberge St Roch
Quartier St Roch
84190 Beaumes de Venise
Tél: 0(4) 90 65 08 21

This is a small restaurant located in a very unpretentious hotel. Having a very small terrace that is better enjoyed in the evening this restaurant offered a good introduction to the cosine of the area.

Le Clos du Pâtre
84330 Caromb
Tél: 0(4) 90 62 38 49

A small family run restaurant that is on the edge of the village of Caromb. Since this is a family run restaurant you can pretty much be ashured that the service is impeccable and the food is outstanding. I would point out that this restaurant is not necessarily suited for small children but if they are well behaved they will get along great with the staff here.

Le Mas de Garrigon
Route de St-Saturnin d’Apt
84220 Roussillon
Tel 04 90 05 63 22

Located in a small luxury hotel that is quite a distance from just about anywhere. The food and service here is quite good but the prices are moderate to expensive.

L’Oustalet Maianen
16 rue Lamartine
13910 Maillane
Tel: (0)4 90 95 74 60

This is a small restaurant in a very small village in Provence. The food and service is great and the restaurant is also family friendly as well.

Pizzeria des Remparts
32 Boulevard des Remparts
84110 Sablet
Tel: 0(4) 90 49 96 17

This is a restaurant for those that have kids in tow. A menu that is very friendly to a family atmosphere with Pizza’s and chips being a large part of the menu. You do not have to order such items as they also serve many adult dishes such as slow roasted lamb and braised steaks with French fiies.

Each family have their own needs so I tried to point out some of the best restaurants in the region of Provence. It all depends upon what your price is and if you have kids or not where you are going to find the best restaurant for you and your family. Hopefully this guide will help a little.

Top Sights To See

The area of Provence is quite laid back. The one thing that many tourists go here is for the various vineyards that are so abundant. Wine tasting is not necessarily a sight to see but should certainly be high on your list if you are in the area of Provence on vacation.

There are numerous small villages and castles that dot the landscape Each having its own history and stories to tell. Hopefully this might serve as a small guide to help you pick out what areas you find the most fascinating during your journeys.

Vaucluse and the Luberon

The Luberon was made famous through the works of Peter Mayle and this area offers many great sights to see including some of the better forested areas of France. Many small villages occupy this area and are mostly populated by the locals as not too many tourists have bought up land and property here. You could easily lose yourself soaking up the atmosphere while just gazing at the world go by.

Bouches-du-Rhône

This area includes the port city of Marseille. This is an area where painters where known to get away from it all and have included such greats as Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. Any area where some of the great artists chose to relax in is high in my book The reasoning is that these artists appreciate beauty and serenity and most likely this area was a great place to find beauty and get away from it all.

Arles

This was the place where Vincent Van Gough lived and worked. Most notably in this town are the well preserved Roman ruins that seem to attract many tourists and other history buffs. A relic that is still used for bull fighting Les Arenes is perhaps one of the best preserved Roman amphitheaters that is still in use today. You can visit this place without taking in a bull fight if you are too squeamish for that.

The area of Provence offers many things to a vast array of people. I am sure that it will be possible for just about everyone to find what they enjoy in this southern area of France.

The Top Events in Provence

The area of Provence is a bit more laid back then many other tourist destinations. After all this place is well known for its fine wine and its many picturesque vineyards that are everywhere in this area. Because of this not too many landmark events take place that will appeal to the tourists who visit for only a short while. This is a place for the slow methodical growing of grapes that make some of the best wines in the world. However there are some events that are worth taking in if you happen to be here at the time.

The first most notable event is that of the Festival d’Avignon which takes place in the walled city of Avignon. This is a event that celebrates the arts including theater, dancing and music. An international audience takes hold during this time in Avignon and the crowds swarm the city to take in every moment. This event has an interesting history in that it was started by the actor and director Jean Vilar in 1947 when he was asked to stage a play of T.S. Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral at Avignon’s Palais des Papes. This later blossomed into a creative outlet for keeping the artist community active and in touch with their audiences. You can witness professionally put on stage plays to ad hoc street performances so there should be something for everyone. To get more information on this event go to www.festival-avignon.com.

Later on from this Festival d’Avignon is the harvest of lavender which creates its own festival in the town of Digne-les-Bains which is in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region. Every year this event is celebrated to highlight the abundant crop of flowers that grow in this region of Provence. A half century old tradition you can imagine that many of the locals are quite passionate about this celebration. This passion shows in how they put on this event as the level of detail is very high and should not be missed. To get more information from the source I would visit www.ot-dignelesbains.fr which obviously is in French but there is also an English version as well.

The one event that encompasses the entire region is the harvesting of the grapes. This event takes place during September through October. Since each vineyard harvests at different times this is a whole month or two affair. Each vineyard will require help and depending on if you really want to you could stay on a vineyard as a helper and receive free room and board in exchange for your hard work in the field. To find out more information on the specifics of what is going on during this time I would visit the website devoted to this at beyond.fr/a/calendar.html as this is probably the most extensive collection that you will come across.

Although Provence does not have too many flashy events like Paris or even Rome this does not detract from its charm. A more relaxed and happy go lucky atmosphere seems to pervade this area of France. I think to its benefit.
